The authors of this chamber musical, Brian Yorkey (libretto and lyrics) and Tom Kitt (music) are known to the Brno audience thanks to their popular comedy, Freaky Friday. As in the case of Freaky Friday, the plot revolves around the next to normal story of one family. The daughter Natalie falls in love for the first time and has to overcome many obstacles with her parents Diana and Dan. They’re dealing with their own issues and with the tragic loss of their young son. Things are intensified by Diana’s bipolar disorder.

The American rock musical premiered on Broadway on 15th May, 2009 and immediately won three Tony Awards from eleven nominations, and was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2010 – rare for a musical – precisely because it deals with topics that are not the norm in musical theatre. This is a very intimate story of a close family circle (and several doctors with whom Diana seeks help). It addresses topics such as depression, drug abuse, medical ethics, parental despair and relationship crises. However, all this is lifted by the brisk pace of contemporary rock music and the black humour of the writing.
