A phenomenal tragedy about a fate which was predetermined by the gods, and so not even a king could escape it. Oedipusnarrated by the Roman playwright Seneca for the first time on a modern Czech stage! This staged reading, which was created for Theatre World Brno and will take place only twice, is a tribute to Eva Stehlíková and František Derfler – important personalities connected with (not only) the Brno cultural scene. Classical philologist, theatrologist and university tutor Prof. Eva Stehlíková was involved in the translation of many ancient texts and in recent years initiated the translation of the complete drama works of Lucius Annaeus Seneca. František Derfler was an actor, director and teacher who founded and led the Theatre at the Table, where he gave performances of (among other things) ancient works. Apart from their cooperation together – most recently during the staged performance of Seneca´s tragedy Thyestes, they were connected by a great friendship whose symbolism may be hidden even in 2019, when they left this world shortly after one another.
“Seneca´s Oedipus (based on, among other things, a Greek drama by Sophocles) is indeed a new, original version of the tragedy. Apart from the fundamental difference in the character of the main hero, there are two major innovations in the construction of the tragedy: extispicy (divination by examining the intestines of a sacrificed animal) and katabasis (a descent into the underworld) along with necromancy (soothsaying by evoking the spirit of the dead). The ending of the tragedy with the suicide of Jocasta ante oculos, before the eyes of the spectators, is also Seneca´s contribution.”
