Hungarian KV Társulat-Trafó is an independent theatre company which was founded by two female performers – Krisztina Urbanovits and Zsuzsa Száger. It deliberately deals with women´s topics. Medea takes place during a group therapy session between a psychologist and three clients, who create situations using motifs and plots from Euripides´ drama concerning a breakup, the involvement of children in conflict and the solution of a crisis using expert counselling. The production is a very forceful insight into a specific problem, and it mirrors the ancient drama in contemporary life. Apart from this, it also deals with issues concerning cultural differences, revenge and guilt. It also makes use of improvisation from the actresses along with puppetry. The concept for the production, which is dominated by the excellent performances of the actresses, was awarded a special prize at the theatre festival in Szeged in 2019.

“Even the ancient gods could have used a psychologist. In this interpretation of Medea, the driving force is not the murder itself but the desire to kill.  The performance is not just about how to dress Medea in modern clothing or how present an ancient text in an original way, but how Medea (as delivered by the Hungarian ensemble) speaks about current society, the position of women and behaviour towards foreigners…”
