30 min before the play there is a lecturer’s introduction on stage – provazek.hall
Two wild beasts: Hašek and Švejk. They are both known across the world, yet they have remained an enigma. Hero or coward? Oaf or confirmed anarchist? Fool or philosopher? Burlesque joke or farce? Hoodwinker or idiot savant? Cynic or boor? Bullshit! In an insane age there is only one thing to do: survive!
In the second part of the project Laughing Beasts, director J.A. Pitínský juggles with various stage genres and notions of who Josef Švejk was. Incidentally, Jaroslav Hašek himself said of the reception of the work: “I don’t know if I managed to convey what I wanted in this book. The fact that I heard one person insult another by saying: “You are as stupid as Švejk” is testament to this. Having said that, if Švejk becomes a new term of abuse, then at least I can console myself with having enriched the Czech language.”
