In 1967, Patti Smith, barely twenty years old, immerses herself in the dazzling world of New York City. As early as the seventies, she becomes a cult figure. Her song Because the Night makes her a world star. In 2005, during her trip to Vienna, Patti Smith is seated opposite Helene Hegemann, a writer-to-be, and both keep silent for three quarters of an hour. At that time, Patti is eighty years old, while Helene has not even turned fourteen. In 2021, Hegemann writes a book about this get-together: a confession of love to her deceased mother. The production Because the Night recounts the life of an extraordinary artist. It relates music, loss, memories, and the redemptive force of art.
