What would happen if we replaced love and fidelity with egoism and pragmatism? What sort of awful combats and victims would such substitution generate? Medea introduces the topic of betrayal and revenge, but also that of abandonment. The experience of being betrayed and abandoned by a close person unavoidably undermines the safety of our world. Can we actually trust other people? In his interpretation of the famous myth, Euripides contests traditional gender roles, inquires into the issue of evil in us and round us, and ponders why man is incapable to defy it permanently. One of the most celebrated ancient tragedies has been newly translated by the ancient Greek expert Matyáš Havrda and the writer Petr Borkovec.
