Roland Schimmelpfennig, Germany’s most performed contemporary playwright, has reimagined Homer’s monumental story of Ulysses: he wrote a fictitious Odyssey in which the role of the hero is taken over by a history teacher who claims to know best the true account. This new rendition, characterised by post-truth architecture, was created for the Ludus Theatre by the stage director Dávid Paška with his German team and Slovak actresses. Is there truly a triumphant, genuinely heroic return from war? Aren’t such returns rather desperate, bloodstained and, therefore, revolting?
